Peter N Schlegel, MD

Dr. Schlegel is an internationally recognized urologist who is recognized for providing the best medical care and achieving the best results possible for his patients. He has served as Chair of Urology at Cornell, where he developed a program that was recognized as being the #5 top department in the country as ranked by US News & World Report. He is now focusing on providing the best patient care possible for urologic conditions. His primary focus of activity is maintaining Men’s Health and treating male infertility, focusing on the condition of severe male infertility, such as azoospermia.

Background

Peter N Schlegel received his medical degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical School, and did his general surgery and urology training at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He subsequently did a fellowship at New York Hospital – Cornell and The Population Council on the grounds of Rockefeller University before joining the faculty at Cornell. He was promoted to full Professor and became Chair of Urology in 2001, as well as Senior Clinical Dean at Weill Cornell Medical College in 2017. He has provided key contributions in the field of prostate cancer, developed one of the best prostate cancer programs in the country at Weill Cornell, and has been recognized as a lead expert in Men’s Health issues.

Career

Dr. Schlegel’s contributions to the field of male infertility are extensive. He has developed new genetic analyses to understand the causes of the severe form of male infertility known as non-obstructive azoospermia, and he is recognized as a Certified Genetics Laboratory Director by New York State. His research has identified nearly 25 additional genetic causes of infertility, that can lead to new treatments. He has been the first to publish articles on medical treatment of infertility with aromatase inhibitors and demonstrate the value of such treatment. He is perhaps best recognized for developing the surgical procedure of microTESE, now recognized as the safest and most effective sperm retrieval treatment for non-obstructive azoospermia.
