-Please take the Celecoxib medication (two capsules per day, preferably AM & PM), as well as the acetaminophen (every 8 hours) to prevent pain.
-Also take the gabapentin as instructed to prevent pain for the first several days after surgery
– Oxycodone may be taken if the pain is not controlled with celecoxib/acetaminophen.
-A small amount of blood and/or drainage from the incision is expected. Bruising of the scrotal skin & base of the penis (black & blue) is expected. If there is excessive bleeding into the dressing, please call the office.
-An ice pack should be kept on each side of the scrotum for 72 hours following surgery. It may be placed inside the supporter. The ice should be kept on the scrotal skin continuously, day and night. Do not remove the ice every twenty minutes. This will help minimize swelling.
-You may remove the gauze and scrotal support after the initial 48 hours. You may shower at
this point. Reapply the scrotal support, or tight underwear, after showering, and continue to ice the area.
-You should not drive or work for 1 week following surgery; you may be driven. If your job
involves light desk work, you may return in 3-4 days.
-It is common to experience some discomfort even 2-3 weeks following surgery. You may resumenormal activities as tolerated; however, no sexual activity for 3-4 weeks and avoid sports and heavy lifting for 3 weeks.
-The athletic supporter, or tight underwear, should be worn, at all times, for 2-3 weeks following surgery. After 3 weeks, you may wear snug jockey shorts when participating in sports or strenuous activity.
-A low grade fever, up to 101 degrees, is common for the first 2-3 days following surgery. Please remember to cough, deep breathe, and walk.
Follow-up:
-Please phone the office and schedule your follow-up appointment.
-If you live out of the area, please see Dr. Schlegel before leaving New York.
-Additional followup with hormone blood tests is recommended in one month.
-If you are in the New York region, then a followup appointment in one month is recommended.
-This visit will include review of the findings during surgery as well as your pathology report and other information available at that time.

Immediately after the vasectomy, please be careful for at least 2 hours, as the local numbing medicine will not have worn off and you could cause bleeding if you are too active.
Keep taking the celecoxib medication twice a day to help prevent pain.
If you have excess pain that is not controlled by celecoxib, please call my office.
You are expected to have a few drops of blood from the incision. If you have a progressive dripping of blood that is not controlled with ice, or if you notice swelling of the scrotum that is the size of a third testicle, then please call me.
No heavy lifting (greater than 10 pounds) for at least 3-4 days after the procedure.
Limit working out or other strenuous activity for a week.
Do not ejaculate for a week after the procedure.
Use contraception until a semen test shows that you have no significant sperm in the ejaculate.
A semen analysis should be done 2-3 months after the procedure. Please call my office to schedule the test at an appropriate laboratory.
